At Glide we offer our customers two types of student broadband deals with a variety of time frames. In this article, we’ll explain the differences to help you and your housemates decide which is the best option for you
Tariffs
Our standard broadband is available on a six-month contract, that’s the minimum term but it can be extended to the amount of time you need. We offer this flexibility so you only pay for the time you’re at University. It’s a cost-effective option at £22.99 a month for unlimited use.
Fibre broadband is more expensive and must be taken out for a minimum term of nine months. For a 12-month contract, you’ll pay £35.99 a month for unlimited use.
Free set up and installation
Whichever of these student broadband deals you choose, you will get a free router that offers wide reach for everyone in the property worth £79.99. The value for money is even better if you also sign up for Glide energy services and pay your electricity bills and other utilities with us. The £29.99 broadband activation cost will be waived should you do so and we’ll organise connection whenever you’re ready for us.
Why Glide broadband?
Unlike some Internet Service Providers, Glide do not restrict your internet speeds at busy times. The speed your router gives your household remains the same at any time of day or night.
You won’t experience a 6pm dip with us which is when lots of people return home and begin using their internet. We know you need to chill out and watch some kittens waking up on YouTube after a busy day in the library.
We can make this offer because our broadband network has a solid connection and subsequently there’s much less rage-inducing time-lag on the screen. This basically means that it’s a great service for anyone who is interested in online gaming.
So why would you choose fibre broadband over standard broadband?
Let’s explore what makes the extra cost and longer contract terms worth the investment. In reality, you may not actually have a choice since fibre covers 85% of the country but that’s not everyone obviously. We’ll let you know when we quote a price for you if your rental property is within that percentage.
In the simplest terms, fibre broadband will deliver a faster internet connection and this is measured in Mbps (megabits per second.) Choose a fibre student broadband deal and your download speed will be 76Mbps in comparison to 17Mbps for standard (ADSL) broadband. To upload, it would be 19Mbps as opposed to 1Mbps. In practical terms this means that if you want to watch a YouTube clip it will run smoothly without pauses or that a document you need saving for an essay will arrive on your computer quicker.
Is this extra speed really necessary?
It all depends on how many people are in your student house who are sharing the internet. If you live in a property with lots of other housemates who have friends coming and going and then tapping into your wi-fi then, yes, the extra speed will be very useful.
In a small house with fewer tenants and not as many visitors then standard broadband should be fast enough for your needs.
Remember that your actual internet speed is never guaranteed. The router’s distance from the exchange, the wiring quality within the property and any presence of external interference will all determine how fast it actually is.
You’ll obviously need a phone line with which to operate broadband. Remember too that Glide will provide a telephone and broadband package at a much more competitive rate than any of the large communication providers. We’ll also be sure to get you connected as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Do watch out though! If you miss an installation appointment, we’ll charge you a fee. We’re very keen to keep our operations running smoothly since this helps makes us a market leading and good value utility company and we want to protect that reputation.
There’s no doubt that student house sharing can be chaotic. Studies, exams, friends, clubbing and relationships are at the forefront of student lives. Electricity bills, water rates and broadband deals are mundane tasks you know you have to sort out but really wish somebody else would.
We can do that!
- Over the last ten years Glide have provided our services to 150,000 people living in all types of shared accommodation.
- Our experienced staff work out each housemate’s fair share of the bills and services generated at the property they live in.
- The amount owed is taken by direct debit each month. That’s one amount for all bills.
- Online tracking is easily available so each tenant can stay informed.
At the beginning of your tenancy, you and your housemates should take a couple of days out of the madness to help us, to help you organise your household bills.
Then for the rest of the year all you have to do is pay the monthly, expected, equally shared out amount of money on time. Student broadband deals, telephone, water, electricity bills all taken care of. Job done!
