Despite what might feel like one of the longest English winters on record (as it does every year) spring is finally in the air. Green shoots are appearing, the nights are growing longer and despite its long-term absence, we’ve even started to see the occasional welcome display of dazzling sunshine.
As well as looking forward to showing off your knobbly knees and taking long walks through the countryside, now’s the time to start thinking about taking advantage of the warmer weather by giving your home an energy spring clean.
As you’ll know already, Glide customers are refunded when they use less energy than expected so as well as doing something good for the planet, you could also be rewarded financially for your noble energy saving efforts.
- First off, rather than heating your kitchen up with your energy-sapping oven, take a step outside and fire up that trusty barbecue. If it’s a little too chilly to grill outside, try cooking on the stove instead.
- Take quick showers instead of long baths to avoid heating your house up further on really hot days and use less hot water.
- Try to only use your dishwasher and tumble dryer in the evenings to avoid heating up the house and always wash full loads.
- For less stubborn stains, consider washing your clothes in cold water to save energy and take advantage of the warm weather by drying them outside.
- Turn your heating thermostat down or off and take advantage of the warmer air temperatures.
- Clean the grime off your windows to let more light in and remember to draw your curtains at dusk to keep the heat in.
- Turn the lights off during the daytime and replace all of your bulbs with energy saving light bulbs.
- Try to avoid doing things that generate a lot of heat, such as running a computer all day, burning open flames, and using hot devices such as curling irons or hair dryers. Even stereos and televisions will add some heat to your home.
- Spend more time outdoors. It goes without saying that while you’re out and about, you’ll be using a lot less energy at home.
- Lastly, don’t forget about your own energy. Wearing lighter clothing can help cool you down without having to waste energy on electric fans or air conditioning.
