smoke alarm

The government have announced new safety regulations that will require landlords to install smoke alarms in all of their properties. Housing Minister Brandon Lewis outlined the new measures that will ensure tenant safety and reduce the number of deaths and injuries from house fires every year.

This will take effect from 10th October 2015, with a plan to allocate funding to England’s 46 fire and rescue authorities to help support local landlords by providing free alarms.

The proposed changes require the fitting of a smoke alarm on every floor of a property, which will have to be tested at the beginning of every tenancy.

Failure to install alarms could see landlords facing up to a £5,000 civil penalty.
