Winter can be an especially unpleasant time to be a student. Badly insulated student housing doesn’t fare well with keeping the February chill out – it felt like there were times that summer would never come. Fortunately, spring has sprung and the summer months are just over the horizon of (somewhat daunting) exams. Before you get too bogged down in cramming, here are a few ways to enjoy the heat.

  1. Have a BBQ

Student barbecues are very different from the middle aged version. Think less potato salad, goats cheese, and marinated kebabs. Instead, find the cheapest barbecue, sausages and lager. Combine, wait, and enjoy. It’s hard to beat the feeling of holding a hotdog in one hand and a beer in the other while the much awaited sun beats down on your face.

  1. Visit Your Local Beer Garden

British students spend nine months of the year drinking in dark and dingy living rooms, bars and clubs.  But when the sun comes out it’s time to don your shades, grab some friends and occupy a bench at the nearest outdoor drinking spot. You’ll be surprised how many amazing rooftop terraces or riverside bars there might be in your student city.

  1. Go For A Run!

Excuses start to wear thin as the weather turns pleasant outside. Now May is here, there is very little chance of your exercise routine being disturbed by gale force winds or massive hailstones. So take the opportunity to go for a jog (in shorts rather than hat and scarf) or a cycle while it lasts.

  1. Let Your Feet Free

Called ‘earthing’ by some, many sources have stressed the importance to our wellbeing of letting our bare feet come into contact with the natural ground. So much so that a patch of grass was installed at London Euston station so overstressed commuters could feel some greenery between their toes. Now that exams are coming up, it’s especially important to unwind once in a while.

  1. Turn The Heating Off!

This is the most important one, and should probably have been at the top of the list. If you are going to be outside enjoying all of the above, don’t spend a fortune on keeping your house heated through the summer months. Even if it means venturing down into that dark scary basement, go turn the radiators off until the chill comes back.
