Yesterday we Gliders did a wonderful thing – we gave blood. Twelve of us headed down to Birmingham’s Blood Donation Centre, ready and willing to donate a pint in aid of helping to save lives.

Initiated by Glider Chris Sharman, who is an experienced donor, we rallied together to get involved in this good cause, with this being a first-time experience for many of the group.

Chris said, “It is important that anyone who needs blood can get it, currently that requires individuals going to donate as blood cannot be created synthetically.

Ever since my first donation I have been trying to encourage other people to do the same. If a friend or co-worker needed blood then they are only going to get it from willing donors. That to me is scary and why it is such a humble and selfless act to do.

After inviting a few co-workers to donate a few months back, I had only seen interest from a few individuals, but today around about 12 Gliders came forwards to offer their blood to those in need. I was amazed to see that so many people cared and were more than willing to perform such a selfless act.

I want to thank everyone for taking that hour out of their day to do something amazing. I will always encourage more to donate as it is such a great feeling to know you’re helping those in need. I look forward to going with everybody again around mid-November and I will be sure to post something in the office nearer the time and hopefully we can get some more first-time donors!”

If you’ve not given blood before, then it’s definitely something we think you should consider as it will literally save lives. Your blood may be used to save the life of a victim involved in a serious accident, or during an operation, or even in a blood transfusion. Giving blood is a gift that can make a huge difference to somebody’s life without making much difference to your own. It will take no more than an hour out of your day and you’ll be making a positive contribution to society.

If you’re a regular donor or are thinking about donating, or maybe yourself or somebody you know has needed a blood donation? Share your stories with us! You can message us on Facebook or Tweet us.
