It’s that time of year again, it comes around so fast- I guess that’s what a year of having the time of your life does. Finally those exams are over and the time to move out is edging near. Suddenly, the panic kicks in and you realise just how much you have to do, summer now seems so far away. Don’t worry, it’s really not that far and if you start now and get ahead of the game you can kick back whilst everyone else is stressin’.
No one said moving out is easy, you’ll have a moment with your head in your hands thinking where to even start, which throws you right back to the start of the year when you got your 50 billion essays to write. Luckily, there are a few ways to help you get your move on!
Clean like a boss
The the thought of cleaning is almost too unbearable to think about. But, if you leave it you won’t get your deposit back. Get your housemates together and divide jobs between you, the more people involved, the quicker it’ll get done. Don’t forget all of those hidden spots like behind the sofa, (you may even find some ££), the skirting boards, inside the oven, beneath the toilet seat, your landlord will literally look everywhere so reduce any risk of your deposit being deducted.
Defrost that freezer
This will probably be your first time ever defrosting your freezer, you’ll likely come across food you forgot you even had because it’s had a year to ice over. Start gorging your way through removing all items, once you’ve done this, turn the whole thing off, place a towel down, leave the doors open and let that freezer defrost. In your next home, try not to let it frost over so you don’t have to do this when moving out of your next home.
Bills, Bill, Bills…close them!
Doing this will be a very satisfying task, but one that far too many overlook. If you forget to cancel your bills, you could rack up a lot of debt that you won’t realise you’re mounting up, because all letters will be sent to your old address. It’s such a quick and easy task that it’s not worth leaving. Don’t forget to take your final meter readings too and then give to your suppliers with a forwarded address.
Get packing
If you’re anything like me, you’ll leave packing to the very last minute, then regret leaving it to the last minute and tell yourself you’ll be more organised in future (it’s a never ending cycle). Start getting your stuff together early doors. Sort through what you don’t wear or use anymore and get some empty boxes to put them in from your local super market. If you’re living with the ‘rents over summer, start thinking how you’ll shift your belongings!
Re-direct post
I bet you’ve hated receiving random post from previous tenants all year haven’t you? Well guess what, they forgot to redirect their post and could be missing out on loads of offers (as well a debt letters). Redirecting post could not be easier, all you need to do is visit the Royal Mail website and they take care of everything for you. Boom!
Expect the unexpected
Believe it or not, nothing is perfect…unfortunately, things are bound to go wrong when moving out. I’ll always remember accidentally pulling the radiator off the wall (don’t ask) when I was packing my stuff up, luckily my dad came over to fix it for me, so the landlord never knew. If things go wrong, try not to have a mental break down, just take a few deep breaths and carry on… or call your parents!
Sort your new bills
While you are on a mission closing your current bills, you may as well organise your new bills for your new house. It can, however, be a nightmare deciding on what providers to go for, the best deals and who’s going to volunteer their direct debit. Fortunately, there is an option to take this stress away and that’s glide. They provide and combine all of your monthly bills between each tenant each month, it’s so simple.
Finally, all the hard work has been done, it wasn’t that bad, was it? Okay, so maybe it was, but at least you can now crack on and enjoy your summer! Remember, the earlier you start the more prepared you’ll feel.
