I think we can all agree we’ve had a pretty cold winter, just going outside where it’s far too chilly isn’t even an option at times, especially when it’s way more tempting to stay in all day wrapped in a duvet binging on Netflix.

Keeping a warm house can be heavy on your utility bills,  therefore through our years of experience we have found some top tips for you to stay warm and save money this winter.

Cling film your windows

It actually works and if you’re super neat with it, you wont even notice. Make sure you cover all your windows to stay nice and toastie!

Block that draught

Keep that draft out by blocking all the gaps, especially on your front door. You could even use self adhesive rubber seals which are pretty cheap and easy to install.

Open curtains by day, closed by night

It may seem obvious to do this, but it’s actually a no brainer for keeping your house warm. Keeping them open during the day lets natural heat in and traps it at night when your curtains are closed.

Move your furniture

Keep your radiators clear of furniture so that heat isn’t being trapped and is heating the whole room instead.

Tin foil can come in handy

This is a dream for keeping your house warm, just place some heat reflecting foil at the back of your radiators and it will prevent heat escaping through your walls.

Make use of your winter wardrobe

Don’t give in by turning your heating up full wack, instead layer up with jumpers and scarfs or wrap yourself in a duvet- it’s a cheaper (and the more comfy) option.

 Turn it down a notch

Research shows that by turning your thermostat down by just 1°C it can reduce your heating by 10%. You also only need to set your dial to 18°C to maintain a warm house.

Switch the timer on

There’s no need to have your heater on 24/7, instead set it to come on 30 minutes before you wake up and when you go to bed. Don’t make the mistake of keeping it on a low temperature all day as this is wasted heat.

 Invest in a rug

There’s nothing worse than walking on a freezing cold floor! If you have bare flooring in your student home, then get yourself a rug, it’ll also trap the cold.

Hopefully these tips will keep you nice and warm this winter  whilst saving those pennies to spend on something more fun!
