As a student, it’s imperative to save money wherever you can. Whether it be on food, clothes or online subscriptions. However, did you know that the best way to save money is through sharing household bills? Just by making a few small adjustments to your lives, you will be able to save hundreds of pounds throughout the year.

And here’s how to do it…

Wash all your clothes at once…

Don’t put two t-shirts in the wash just for the sake of it – make sure you put everything in together. If you don’t have enough socks for a full load, remember that you’re sharing household bills, ask one of your housemates if they want anything washing too!

Only turn the heating on when it’s absolutely essential…

Student gas bills can become extortionate, especially when you have the heating on 24/7. Invest in some good, thick jumpers and you’ll end up saving huge amounts. Don’t forget to keep the doors closed too – it’s surprising how much heat is lost from a room when you keep the door open.

Make use of places that have their own business utility services…

Or in other words, use your university (or local) library, coffee shop and internet café to charge your devices and download videos. These places will have their own business utility services which they will pay for, meaning that you’ll get to use as much electricity and internet as you want – all for absolutely nothing (or maybe for the price of a cup of tea)!

Close your curtains…

This is a great little hack for keeping your student gas bills down. Heat seeps out of the windows at night, so keeping your curtains closed will help to limit this as much as possible. This means you won’t have to keep your heating on all night in those cold winter months. Oh, and buy a blanket too!

If anyone comes to stay, make sure they chip in…

If your housemate has constantly got their girlfriend/boyfriend staying over, then make sure they pay for their fair share. Why should you have to pay for someone else’s shower and laundry? If you notice someone staying more often than not in the house, ask them to chip in and get sharing household bills too. Even if it’s just £5 for the week they visit – it’s going to be a lot fairer on the rest of the house.

It’s much harder to keep your household bills under control when you’re sharing with others, but it’s not impossible. Everyone should keep an eye on each other and shout out when someone should cut back on their usage – after all, it’s all too easy to stay in singing in a hot shower for 20 minutes without realising it. But with these top tips, you’ll be on your way to saving great amounts throughout the year.
