Supporting safer university digital estates
Universities are responsible for increasingly complex digital environments.
Student networks now support study, communication, entertainment, welfare and everyday campus life. But they also create a challenge: how can universities identify online risk signals across large, bring-your-own-device estates without deploying intrusive software, increasing admin, or relying on reports that arrive too late to be useful?
For many institutions, content filtering is already part of the answer. But filtering alone is not always enough.
The real value comes when filtering events are turned into clear, secure and actionable insight for the teams who need to respond.
That is why Glide has developed Glide Protect Insight.
The challenge: safer digital estates at scale
University networks are different from school or corporate environments.
Students use their own devices. They connect across halls, residences, shared spaces and accommodation blocks. Many of those devices are not managed by the institution. Network traffic is high-volume, always-on and spread across large estates.
That makes online safety and web-filtering reporting harder to operationalise.
Universities need to understand what types of harmful or concerning content are being blocked, whether patterns are emerging, which events require priority review, and who needs to be alerted.
This is not just a technology issue. It is a workflow issue.
The question is no longer simply can we block harmful content?
It is:
Can the right people see the right information quickly enough to make an informed decision?
Why basic reporting may not be enough
Basic content-filtering reports can provide useful high-level visibility. They can show trends, blocked categories and overall activity.
But universities increasingly need reporting that is more structured, more timely and more relevant to safeguarding, wellbeing and Prevent-related risk management.
Raw network data is not enough. It needs to be turned into outputs that authorised teams can understand and act on.
That means reports and alerts need to be clear, secure, focused on agreed categories, delivered to nominated contacts, and aligned to the institution’s own escalation process.
For large student accommodation networks, the ability to do this work without installing software on student-owned devices is especially important.
Introducing Glide Protect Insight
Glide Protect Insight is a managed content filtering, reporting and priority alerting service for universities and student accommodation providers.
It helps institutions move beyond basic filtering by turning network-level web-filtering events into scheduled reports and priority alerts.
The service includes:
- DNS filtering to block access to harmful online content;
- continuous monitoring of agreed categories;
- scheduled reports, with monthly, daily or hourly options;
- Priority 1 alerts configured around agreed criteria;
- and secure outputs for authorised users.
Glide Protect Insight is designed for the realities of higher education networks: large estates, high device volumes, unmanaged student devices and the need for simple, reliable operational workflows.
How it works
Glide Protect Insight is designed as a hands-off managed service that supports existing university processes.
Filtering events are captured through Netsweeper DNS filtering. Glide then creates reports from the agreed data set, publishes them securely, and notifies the university’s nominated contacts.
The university team then reviews the information and responds through its own safeguarding, security, student support or accommodation processes.
This gives institutions clearer visibility without asking teams to interpret raw technical data or manage another complex platform.
Reporting options to match your needs
Different institutions need different levels of reporting and alerting.
Glide Protect Insight is available in three straightforward options:
Base reporting
Monthly reporting covering all end users, without Priority 1 alerting.
Daily Priority 1 alerts
Daily Priority 1 reporting, alongside the monthly base report.
Hourly Priority 1 alerts
Hourly Priority 1 reporting, alongside the monthly base report.
Each option is configured around agreed content categories, escalation contacts and secure report access.
Supporting collaboration across university teams
Online safety in higher education does not sit with one team alone.
IT teams operate the infrastructure. Security teams consider risk and incident response. Student services and safeguarding teams manage welfare concerns. Accommodation teams often sit closest to the residential environment.
Glide Protect Insight helps connect those teams by turning filtering events into structured reports and alerts that can be reviewed by the right people.
It is not designed to replace professional judgement or institutional policy. It is designed to provide clearer, more actionable information so universities can make informed decisions.
Built for BYOD environments
One of the most important aspects of Glide Protect Insight is that it is designed for large student-owned device environments.
Universities do not need to install software on student devices to benefit from network-level filtering, reporting and alerting.
That makes the service particularly suited to university halls of residence, large managed Wi-Fi estates, PBSA environments and mixed accommodation portfolios.
Five questions universities should ask
When reviewing content filtering and online safety reporting, universities may want to ask:
- Does our current filtering approach work across student-owned devices and large BYOD estates?
- Do our reports provide actionable information, or only high-level activity summaries?
- Can priority events be brought to the attention of nominated contacts quickly and securely?
- Are IT, security, accommodation, safeguarding and student services teams working from the same information?
- Is our reporting approach aligned to our own policies, escalation model and data governance requirements?
If the answer to any of these questions is unclear, it may be time to review whether your current web-filtering service is giving your teams the visibility they need.
